Welcome to Substack and thanks for the shout out! Stay tuned-- I have a post tomorrow on some things you can do retroactively to your newsletter, although most of the tips you have already included. Looks great!

Thanks Courtney! I am still pondering a subtitle or picking a different title that is a bit more explicit about the topics covered here... But it will come! Looking forward to your post.

What a delight to discover your Substack (thanks to Courtney). I look forward to reading more soon. We have both spent time going through medical records from the Fergus Falls State Hospital for our respective projects and share an intergenerational approach to our narratives.

Love this essay—it’s actually what convinced me to subscribe to you! (You had it linked in your writing/bio/website/something.) Learning the concept of “inherited trauma” has been ground-breaking for me in my quest to understand my burdens and struggles, as well as my strengths. Thank you for sharing your experience with this!

Kiki! Glad you enjoyed this, and thanks for the lovely words. Inherited trauma is so fascinating to me - it's uncanny how the same stories seem to repeat through generations. And this is just one line of ancestors. On my my dad's side, my grandpa actually passed away from appendicitis, unrelated, except that his appendix burst just before a professional ski jump competition he was in (!!) and he decided to jump anyway (!!!). It was before penicillin so he may have died either way, but that mentality of "ignore the body to do the thing" --especially the badass thing that proves...something... is one that I feel he has passed right on down to me also. Maybe a future essay there!

WOW. Gosh. Poor guy. And that is absolutely a lesson I’ve learned as well. Look forward to reading that (potential) essay :)
